Donna Knoll Shannon

Donna K. Shannon, 80, passed away peacefully at 5:25 a.m. on Thursday, June 3, 2010, at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf, Iowa.

She was born on Sept. 7, 1929, in St. Louis, to the late Walter R. Knoll and Evelyn (Sappington) Knoll.

She married Thomas J. Shannon on Jan. 31, 1953, in St. Louis. He preceded her in death on Sept. 25, 2006.

Donna was a devoted schoolteacher in the Alton District for over 30 years, touching many young lives. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Alton, Illinois Retired Teachers Association, OASIS Center of Alton and Delta Gamma Social Sorority in Columbia, Mo. She was an exceptional artist, who enjoyed showing off her talent in needlepoint, sewing, knitting, woodworking and painting. She was also a fantastic cook and showed it in many ways in the foods she prepared for her family and friends. Donna loved people and had a love for life that showed through her exceptional sense of humor and wit. She enjoyed singing and rhyming and anything musical. She was an extraordinary mother, friend and co-heart.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Sally and Michael Dailey of Bettendorf; a beloved granddaughter, Shannon Dailey; her brother and sister-in-law, Walter and Gail Knoll, St. Louis; and her three nephews and their families.

A special thank you to the Silvercrest/Garner Farms family; to her wonderful friends; and a loving thank you to the staff of Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House for their care and compassion… They are truly angels here on Earth.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and her son, Daniel T. Shannon.

Memorial visitation was at 1:30 p.m. June 19, at the First Presbyterian Church in Alton, with the Rev. Brett Hendrickson officiating.

Burial was private at the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis.
