John Casella

John S. Cassella, 88, passed away at 3:15 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 21, 2011, at his residence.

He was born on Dec. 20, 1922, in Alton, the son of William and Martha (Stanley) Cassella.

He married Janet Sharkey on Dec. 16, 1949, in Alton. She preceded him in death in May of 2003.

John served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II in the 12th Armored Division. He then went on to achieve his bachelor's degree at the University of Illinois. He was employed at the Sinclair Oil Company until his retirement. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Alton and the Alton VFW Post 1308. He also enjoyed antique autos and golfing.

He is survived by a brother, Bill Cassella of Bainbridge Island, Wash.; four nephews, John and Claire Cassella of Salem, Mass., Steve and Carol Cassella of Bainbridge Island, Mark and Lisa Cassella of Hasting on the Hudson, N.Y., and Kent Cassella of Burlington, Vt.; eight great-nieces and -nephews; one cousin and her husband, Zoe Ann and Dan Williams of Godfrey; and a very dear friend, Jackie Sweeney of Alton.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.

Visitation will be from 10 until time of service at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26, at the Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey with the Rev. Brett Hendrickson officiating.

Burial will follow at the Alton City Cemetery in Alton with military honors by the Alton VFW Post 1308.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.
