Ernie Flota

Ernie Joe Flota, 77, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010, at home with his family by his side.

He was born June 6, 1932, in Harrisburg, Ill., to Ernie and Myrtle Mae (Baker) Flota.

Ernie married the former Luann Stumpf on June 20, 1954, in Columbia, Ill. She survives.

Ernie was an agent for Metropolitan Life and Sentry Insurance for over 30 years. He was also employed at Bankston Creek Land and Trust. He served his country in the U.S. Navy in the Korean War on the Battleship Iowa. He was a member for 50 years of First Presbyterian Church in Alton, where he was a member of the Session. Ernie was a graduate of Southern Illinois University Carbondale with a BS in marketing, and played on the SIU Tennis Team, No. 2 singles. The greatest joy in his life was spending time with his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by three daughters and their spouses, Cindy and John Lewis of Godfrey, Martha and Rick Plunk of Alton and Laura and Dale Oswald of Independence, Mo.; two sons, Jeffrey Flota of Alton and Alan Flota of Marengo, Ill.; 10 grandchildren, Natalie and Amy Lewis, Jason and Lauren Plunk, Van, Joe, and Joni Oswald, Zachary, Jordynne and Jake Flota.

Ernie was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, David Flota.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 8, at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, at First Presbyterian Church in Alton, with the Rev. Brett Hendrickson officiating.

Burial will be at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey, with military rites conducted by Alton VFW Post 1308 Ritual Team.

Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 4th and Alby, Alton.
